Born in Tokyo in 1908, Shigeru Sugiura won mainstream fame in the 1950s for his cartoons, characterized by a high level of surreal comedy and a host of peculiar characters such as Sarutobi Sasuke and Doron Chibimaru. His influence can still be seen in today's modern manga as well as modern art, movies and music.
